Short answer: The SQE1 syllabus is 13 subjects and 144 topics, and the SRA tests every one of them in the same way: single best answer questions that mix rules with application. The checklist above lists all 144, grouped by paper and by the session each subject sits in from January 2027, with three boxes per topic: notes read, questions done, confident. Tick a topic only when it scores 70% or more on a fresh set of questions, then test it again a fortnight later. The PDF prints on four A4 pages; the CSV opens as a tracker in Google Sheets, Excel, Numbers or Notion.
The checklist is built from the same topic list as the SQE1 syllabus guide, which explains what each subject covers, and it pairs with the 12-week revision timetable, which turns the same 144 topics into a week-by-week order. This page is the tick list: the shortest possible statement of what "finished" means.
What the three boxes mean
Most candidates keep one list and tick a topic when they have read it. That is how people arrive at the exam feeling prepared and scoring 45%. The exam does not test whether you have read a topic; it tests whether you can apply it under time to a scenario you have not seen. So the checklist asks three questions of every topic, and a topic is not done until all three are ticked.
- Notes read. You have worked through the notes or the chapter once, and you could explain the topic's structure to someone else: the rules, the exceptions, the numbers.
- Questions done. You have answered a full set of practice questions on that topic alone, with the explanations read for every option, right or wrong. The practice questions by subject page is where to find sets.
- Confident. A fresh set of questions on the topic scored 70% or more. Not the same set again; a new one. If you are below 70%, the box stays empty and the topic goes back on next week's list.
The fourth column in the CSV, "retest date", is the one that makes the difference. Two weeks after a topic earns its third tick, test it again. If it holds, it is genuinely done. If it drops below 70%, it was fresh in memory, not learned, and the spaced repetition guide explains how to fix that with far less time than a full re-read.
Why the checklist is grouped by session
From January 2027 each SQE1 paper is 170 questions in two sessions of 85, and the SRA has fixed which subjects appear in which session. FLK1 session one is business law and practice, dispute resolution and legal services; session two is contract, tort and the legal system (including constitutional, administrative and EU law). FLK2 session one is wills, trusts and land, with solicitors accounts in its wills context; session two is property practice, criminal liability and criminal law and practice, with solicitors accounts in its property context. Ethics is examined across both sessions of both papers. The January 2027 changes post has the SRA's full table.
That grouping matters for revision because it tells you what will be tested together. A session-one FLK2 candidate who is strong on land and weak on trusts will meet both in the same two and a half hours, and the subject study order guide explains why revising a session's subjects together in the final weeks makes the real morning feel familiar.
The SRA's weightings are in the checklist too: every subject is 14% to 20% of its paper except legal services at 12% to 16%, and ethics runs through both papers at up to 20%. On an 85-question session that means roughly 24 to 34 questions on each of the session's main subjects, so no subject on the list is small enough to skip.

How to use it in the last twelve weeks
- Weeks one to four: first pass. Aim for the first box on every topic in the paper you are sitting first, and the second box on as many as you can. Use the 12-week study plan for the order.
- Weeks five to eight: questions. Every unticked second box gets a full question set. Anything scoring under 50% goes to the top of the list; the hardest subjects ranking explains why the same handful of topics account for most of the failures.
- Weeks nine to twelve: confidence and mocks. Fresh question sets on every topic without a third tick, and at least two full papers in the two-session format. The free mock exam guide covers where to find them and how to review them.
- Every Sunday: count the third ticks. If you have fewer than 100 of the 144 four weeks before the exam, cut the first-pass reading and spend everything on questions. The last-minute revision plan is built for exactly that position.
What the checklist does not do
It does not tell you how much time each topic needs, because that depends on what you already know; the study hours guide does. It does not rank topics by how often they appear, because the SRA publishes weightings by subject, not by topic, though the high-yield topics post shows what the sample questions and practice data suggest. And it does not check the law is current: the SRA's cut-off is four calendar months before the first assessment in the window, so for a first paper on 11 January 2027 the law as it stood on 11 September 2026 is what counts, and the key statutes list is worth a pass before you tick anything as confident.
