The principle established in Woolmington v DPP [1935] AC 462 that the prosecution must prove the defendant's guilt. Viscount Sankey LC stated that throughout the web of the criminal law, the duty of the prosecution is to prove the prisoner's guilt, subject only to the defence of insanity and any statutory exception.
